Presented in collaboration between Pride In Hull and Hull Independent Cinema, we celebrate Pride week with PRIDE ON SCREEN.
The series will present 15 films in four programmes across a range of genres and interests to get your ready for Pride in Hull. The films will take place at 62-63 Humber Street (formerly Fruit) and Vue Cinema Hull between Wednesday 17 and Sunday 21 July.

This year, Pride on Screen is better than ever before, and we’re particularly pleased that local filmmakers are part of the event, and will be joining us to talk to local audiences.”
The series kicks off with FRINGE SHORTS!: THERE’S NOWT SO QUEER AS FOLK TODAY, a programme of short films curated by Martha Kate Margetson of Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest in London. The best LGBTIQA+ storytellers and filmmakers explore the state of queer Britain today, from the ways that we see ourselves represented, to how we express ourselves, how we love, and how we fight for our rights. From local directors to global stories, queer people’s lives are shown in all their beauty and diversity.
Two of the short films in the programme are from Hull filmmakers, ADAE (directed by Tyrone Smith) and THEY, THEM, THEIR (directed by Ruby Seddon-Wilson). Both of the directors will be in attendance for a post-screening question and answer period along with Kai Fin-ain, director of THE BROTHER.
Following on Thursday is the Hull premiere of VITA & VIRGINIA which was the Opening Film at this year’s BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, the biggest LGBT film festival in Europe. Based on a true story, VITA & VIRGINIA details the passionate relationship between literary trailblazer Virginia Woolf, and enigmatic aristocrat Vita Sackville-West. When their paths cross, the magnetic Vita decides the beguiling, stubborn and gifted Virginia will be her next conquest, no matter the cost. The ensuing relationship leads to the birth of Woolf’s bold, experimental novel – Orlando.
On Friday 19 July, to kick off your Pride weekend, and in celebration of the film’s 60th Anniversary, we will present the original drag classic SOME LIKE IT HOT at our SOME LIKE IT QUEER event at 62-63 Humber Street (formerly Fruit).
Before the screening, we’ll discuss the film’s influence on drag in TV, film and popular culture and the state of drag queens (and kings!) in 2019 with SOME LIKE IT HOT expert David N Eldridge, Senior Lecturer in American Studies at Hull University, and Cheddar Gorgeous, member of Family Gorgeous and star of makeover series DRAG SOS, which has it’s premiere on Tuesday 25 June on Channel 4.
The event will also feature appearances from local celebrity drag queens Fanny Nicentite, Regina Sparkles, Gloria Hole and Bobby Mandrell. Celebrations will continue after the film, so attendees are encouraged to come in your best Hollywood glamour drag!
To close off the Festival we’re keeping the party going and paying tribute to this year’s Pride in Hull headline act Melanie C with a screening of SPICE WORLD. All are welcome to join us on that famous double-decker bus for a fun afternoon of glorious 90s pop nostalgia featuring everyone’s favourite girl power gals THE SPICE GIRLS. Singing along is highly encouraged!
David N Elridge, of Pride in Hull said of the collaboration, “Together we’ve fashioned a programme that represents and celebrates the cinematic artists and LGBTQ+ individuals who have imagined the world differently, forged alternative identities and challenged the boundaries that would restrict our lives. We’ve also made each screening a celebratory event for Hull’s community to take part in, an extension of Pride itself.”
Tickets range between £5-7 with discounts available for Hull Independent Cinema members and those under 25.
